An interesting bit from the well-read anonymous London graphic designer who writes Noisy Decent Graphics on "what is art direction."
No Photoshop tips here, instead he gets into things like the role of art direction, chiarascuro and the golden ratio. He's previously taken on explaining other challenging but eminently useful topics like what kerning is. His stuff is worth a read whether "art director" is on your business card or not - he helps us regular folk understand how design works and what makes it good. Things that might be helpful for the next pre-pro you're in:
"Somehow what is ordinary in real life looks lifeless in print or on TV. Visuals often need to be larger than life to just look ordinary."
